Web design & development

WordPress websites built to be handed over, not held hostage.

This page covers what we actually build, what is inside each type of project, and what you receive when it is finished. Everything listed is included in the plan price. Nothing gets added to your invoice without a written quote you have approved first.

The baseline

Six things are true of every site we build, regardless of what you pay.

These are not upsells and they are not on a tier list. They are the floor.

A layout built for you

We start from your content, your colours and your photos. What we do not do is install a marketplace theme, swap out the demo text and call it a custom design. If you have no brand colours yet, we will pick a palette and show you why it suits the business.

Phone layouts done separately

Around three quarters of small-business traffic arrives on a phone, so we lay out every page again at phone width rather than letting the desktop design collapse and hoping for the best. Then we open it on an actual handset before launch.

Forms that reach your inbox

Every form is tested with a live submission before the site goes live. We check it arrives, check it is not landing in spam, and set the reply-to address so hitting Reply answers the customer rather than the website.

The SEO groundwork

Page titles and meta descriptions written per page, one H1 per page, headings in a sensible order, alt text on images that carry meaning, a generated sitemap, and the site submitted to Search Console so Google knows it exists.

Speed and security setup

Caching configured, images compressed before upload rather than after, SSL checked and HTTP redirected, a security plugin set up, and the admin username changed off the default. Small things, but they are the ones that get missed.

A handover you can use

Admin credentials, hosting and domain details in your name, a page-by-page checklist confirming everything works, and a short screen recording walking you through editing your own content.

Build type 01

Small business websites

This is the majority of what we do. Five to ten pages covering what you offer, where you work, who you are and how someone reaches you. Trades, clinics, consultants, salons, restaurants, studios, local services.

The structural decision that matters most is giving each service its own page. Businesses routinely list eight services as bullet points on one page and then wonder why they never appear in search for any of them. A page per service, written in the words customers actually use, is the single change that moves the needle most often.

A page that tries to rank for eight things usually ranks for none of them.
  • A page for each service, written around what people search for
  • Location pages if you serve more than one area
  • Google Maps embed, opening hours and click-to-call on mobile
  • Gallery and testimonial sections you can add to yourself
  • A blog set up and ready, whether or not you plan to use it
  • Contact and enquiry forms routed to the right inbox

Build type 02 · in detail

WooCommerce stores

An online store is not a website with a buy button attached. It is a small piece of financial software that has to take money, calculate tax, work out shipping, email the customer, and tell you what sold. Most of the work is in the parts nobody sees.

What actually gets built

We do not hand over an empty store for you to fill in. Products are loaded, priced and photographed into place, variations configured, and the whole checkout is run end to end with a real test transaction before you ever see it live.

The commonest failure in a small store is not the design. It is a shipping rule that quietly charges $12 to ship a $9 item, or a tax setting that has never been checked, or an order confirmation email nobody ever tested that has been going to spam for six months.

If we have not placed a real order through it ourselves, it is not finished.

The setup, stage by stage

Products and catalogue

Up to 30 products loaded with titles, descriptions, prices, SKUs and images sized consistently. Variable products get their variations built out properly — size, colour, material — each with its own price, stock level and image where it differs.

Categories and navigation

A category structure that makes sense to a shopper rather than to your spreadsheet, plus filters where the catalogue warrants them. Related products and upsells configured on product pages.

Stock and inventory

Stock tracking switched on, low-stock and out-of-stock thresholds set, backorder behaviour decided, and the notification email pointed at an address you actually read.

Shipping

Shipping zones by region, with flat rate, weight-based or free-over-threshold rules as suits the products. Where you use a carrier with live rates, we connect it and compare quoted rates against real ones before launch.

Tax

Tax rules configured for the regions you sell into — GST/HST by province for Canadian stores, state-level rules for US sales — with prices set to display inclusive or exclusive as your market expects. We set what you tell us applies; confirming your obligations is a conversation for your accountant, not for us.

Payments

Your payment gateway connected in live mode, wired to your own account so money reaches your bank directly. Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay enabled where supported, and a real transaction pushed through and refunded to prove the whole loop works.

Emails and accounts

Order confirmation, processing, completed, refunded and failed-payment emails styled to match the store and tested to a real inbox. Customer accounts enabled with order history, saved addresses and password reset checked.

Tracking and reporting

eCommerce tracking in Google Analytics so you can see revenue, conversion rate and which products sell, not just visitor counts. Abandoned cart visibility where the plugin stack supports it.

The pre-launch test we run on every store

Before a store goes live we work through this as a checklist, on both desktop and a phone. Every item has to pass.

  • Add to cart, update quantity, remove from cart
  • Apply a coupon and confirm the discount calculates correctly
  • Checkout as a guest, and again as a registered customer
  • Shipping cost recalculates when the address changes
  • Tax appears correctly for each region you sell to
  • A live card payment completes and appears in your gateway
  • That order is refunded and the refund lands correctly
  • Confirmation email reaches the customer, not the spam folder
  • The order appears in your dashboard with the right totals
  • Stock decrements after purchase and restores after refund

Store build specifications

Platform
WordPress with WooCommerce. Self-hosted on your own hosting account, so there are no platform transaction fees and no monthly licence beyond hosting.
Products included
Up to 30, loaded by us from a spreadsheet or list you supply. Beyond 30, we quote per additional block of products or set up a bulk import if you have a clean data file.
Product descriptions
Written by us as part of the plan. If you supply your own, we format and structure them instead.
Payment gateways
Stripe, PayPal, or your bank's gateway. Connected to your account, in your name. We never route payments through us.
Typical timeline
7–10 business days from approved brief, deposit and product data. The product data is usually what determines the date — a clean spreadsheet moves fast, thirty separate emails does not.
Revision rounds
Four, each one a consolidated list of changes applied within a business day.
Support after launch
30 days. Anything broken or misconfigured in what we built is fixed at no charge.
Training
A recorded walkthrough covering adding a product, editing stock, processing an order, issuing a refund and reading your sales reports.

What a store build does not include. Payment gateway fees and any monthly gateway costs, which you pay directly to the provider. Premium extensions such as subscription billing, bookings, multi-currency or advanced shipping calculators — these are quoted separately with the licence cost shown, and never bought without your approval. Product photography. Ongoing order fulfilment. Accounting or tax advice: we configure the tax rules you tell us apply, and confirming what applies is your accountant's job.

Build type 03

Landing pages for advertising

A page with one job. If you are paying for every click, sending that traffic to a homepage with seven navigation links is the most expensive mistake in small-business advertising — every one of those links is a way to leave without contacting you.

A landing page strips the exits. One offer, stated above the fold in the same language as the ad that brought them there, one thing to do next, and proof arranged underneath for the people who need convincing before they act.

  • Written to match your ad copy, so the promise does not change between click and page
  • Single call to action, repeated down the page as someone scrolls
  • Form or call tracking wired up before launch, so you can attribute leads
  • Built light and fast, because paid traffic is impatient and Quality Score notices
  • Compliant with Google Ads landing page policy — a real business address, working policy links, no misleading claims

Why homepages convert badly on paid traffic

  • The headline speaks to everyone, so it speaks to no one in particular
  • Navigation offers a dozen ways to wander off
  • The specific offer in the ad is nowhere on the page
  • The form is three scrolls down, below the fold on a phone
  • Nothing on the page is measurable, so you cannot tell what worked

Build type 04

Rebuilds and rescues

An existing site that has become a liability: slow, broken on phones, running plugins last updated in 2019, or sitting behind a developer who has stopped replying to email.

How we approach a rebuild

Full backup first

Files and database, taken and stored before anything is touched. If a rebuild goes sideways, there is always a way back to exactly what you had.

Map the existing URLs

We list every page currently indexed by Google. Anything that changes address gets a 301 redirect so the ranking and any links pointing at it carry across instead of dying at a 404.

Migrate the content that earns

Blog posts and service pages that already bring in traffic get moved across, not quietly dropped because they were inconvenient to rebuild.

Rebuild on a staging copy

The new site is built alongside the old one and reviewed there. Your live site stays up and working the entire time.

Recover the accounts

Where hosting, the domain or the admin login are in someone else's name, we help you go through the registrar and host's transfer process to get them back under your control.

What usually needs fixing

  • Images uploaded at full camera resolution, which is the usual reason a small site takes eight seconds to load
  • A dozen plugins doing the work of three, several of them abandoned
  • No SSL, or SSL installed but HTTP never redirected
  • A layout that was never laid out for phones at all
  • Contact forms that stopped delivering months ago and nobody noticed
  • Every page sharing one title tag, or none having one
  • An admin account still called "admin" with a password from 2018

If you have lost access entirely — the developer has gone quiet and you do not know who holds the domain — send us the web address and we will tell you what we can determine from public records about where it is hosted and who the registrar is. There is no charge for that, and no obligation afterwards.

The stack

What we build on, and why.

We are not neutral about this, so it is worth explaining rather than presenting it as the only option.

WordPress

Not the most fashionable choice among developers, and we are aware of that. It is the one that leaves you able to hire any developer in any city to work on your site afterwards, and to move hosting without rebuilding. Lock-in is the thing we are optimising against.

Elementor

Because you should be able to change your own opening hours at nine on a Sunday night. A site you have to email someone to edit is a site that slowly goes out of date.

Your hosting, your domain

Registered in your name, paid by you directly, roughly $15 a year for a domain and $80–$200 for hosting. We will recommend a provider and set it all up, but the account is yours from the first day.

When we will tell you we are the wrong choice. If you need a web application rather than a website — a booking platform with complex logic, a members system handling sensitive records, a native mobile app, or anything requiring a dedicated back-end team — WordPress is the wrong tool and we are the wrong studio. We would rather say that at the quoting stage than learn it halfway through on your budget.

Plan comparison

What each plan covers.

Prices are ranges rather than fixed rates — where a project lands depends on its scope, and you get one exact figure in writing before anything is charged.

24–48 hour delivery applies to Starter and Business builds, and the clock starts once your approved brief, deposit and content are all in — not at first contact. Professional builds take 3–5 business days and eCommerce stores 7–10. Your written quote states the actual date for your project.

Not included in any plan: domain registration, web hosting, premium plugin licences, paid stock photography, logo design, and content you ask us to write outside the plan. Each is optional, quoted in advance, and paid by you directly to the provider wherever possible so the account stays in your name.

Build questions

Things worth knowing before you commit.

Can I really edit the site myself afterwards?

Yes, and it is the reason we build the way we do. Text, images, prices, opening hours, new pages and blog posts are all editable through Elementor without touching code. Your handover recording walks through it. What we would not recommend doing yourself is restructuring the layout of a page or installing new plugins — that is where sites tend to break.

What if I need more than 30 products in my store?

Not a problem, it just changes the quote. If you have clean product data in a spreadsheet, bulk import is quick and the cost per additional product is small. If the data needs cleaning or the descriptions need writing, that is where the time goes. Send us the list and we will price it before you commit.

Do I have to supply photos?

Your own photos are almost always better than stock, particularly for trades, restaurants and anything where people want to see real work. Where you have none, we use licensed stock images. For product photography in a store build, you will need real photos of the actual products — stock will not do, and it is worth getting them shot properly.

What happens if I want changes after the revision rounds are used?

We quote them before doing them. Small text tweaks during your support window are usually absorbed without a fuss. Larger changes — new pages, new sections, a different design direction — get a written quote and you decide. Nothing is ever added to an invoice you have not approved.

Will my site rank on Google when it launches?

It will be built so that it can, which is not the same thing. Correct titles, headings, a sitemap, decent speed and Search Console connected are the groundwork. Actually ranking for competitive terms takes months of content and links, and anybody promising otherwise is guessing. If ranking matters to you commercially, that is an SEO engagement, not a build.

Who owns everything when we are done?

You do, once the project is paid in full — the design, the pages, the content we wrote, the domain, the hosting account and the WordPress installation. Every credential is in your handover email. You can move to another developer at any point without asking us or paying us anything.
